You’ve probably already heard about colon hydrotherapy but you still might be wondering what happens to your body after the treatment. What should you eat and drink? Will this treatment affect your mood in any way?
Before you start learning more about the effects that colonic cleansing has on your body, make sure that you’re the right candidate for the treatment. You can do so by checking with your primary care physician if a colonic is a good idea based on your health. For most people, colonic hydrotherapy is perfectly safe and beneficial and there are ways you can make the effects last longer! Let’s get into this together.
If this is your first colonic cleanse
The procedure is always the same. Water is flushed through the colon by inserting a tube into the rectum which stimulates the bowels to help you go to the bathroom. The session typically lasts around 45 minutes and it doesn’t hurt. It’s even possible that you’ll see waste leaving the body, depending on what type of machine is being used.
What happens to the body after colon hydrotherapy?
After receiving a treatment you might go to the bathroom much more frequent once you get home. You’ll notice an increase in bowel movements but that’s okay. Just make sure you stay hydrated. And don’t get worried about the different smell - the sight and smell of waste might be different than usual.
Your body will probably keep getting rid of toxins a few more weeks after cleansing. That means the colonic worked.
Your mood will change.
Some people say that they feel lighter and “peppier” after the treatment. They also feel less bloated and even experience a more even complexion. There’s also a possibility that you’ll feel tired post treatment;cause irritation and when they are removed the person can feel their fatigue from holding on. These clients fall into the 5% category and they usually gave environmental illness, chronic fatigue, multiple chemical sensitivity, dehydration, advanced candida or imbalance in good/bad flora.
If you’re not in this 5% group, you’ll probably feel an immediate sense of lightness, joy, and clarity. Most of the clients leave a colonic session in a completely different mind space than what they came with. That’s mostly because of the fact that besides allowing the body to remove toxic wastes a colonic can also relax the enteric and central nervous systems.

What if the “healing crisis” occurs?
In the day or two after the treatment, you can experience aches, fever, headache, nausea, gas, fatigue or frustration. This is attributed to the stirring up of the toxins and it doesn’t last long. Make sure to rest, drink plenty of water and allow your body to heal itself.
Always make sure that you’re drinking enough water. The easiest way to determine your daily water requirements is to divide your body weight in half and that’s the number of ounces of water you should drink in one day.
